FUTURE ANNUAL MEETINGS OF THE
CGU
There has been considerable discussion at
CGU Executive Committee meetings about future locations for the
annual meetings. Options considered vary from holding all future
meetings in Banff to returning to the old system of moving
locations every year. For the past few years we have met in Banff.
One advantage of a stable location (analogous to the Dec. AGU
meeting in San Francisco) is that everyone knows ahead of time
where the meeting will be held, and can plan accordingly. Another
is that with a willing and able local organizing committee
in place at the University of Calgary, each successive meeting
runs more smoothly and with seemingly (at least to the rest of us)
little effort. A final advantage is that Banff is in a beautiful
location to which people from across the country are attracted,
with many diverse options for mid-meeting field excursions. The
major disadvantage is that the same group of scientists are
always faced with the expense of long distance travel for
themselves and their students. In an attempt to offset this
aspect of a constant Banff location the CGU student travel award
fund has been increased to $5,000 per year. These funds are to
contribute to travel expenses of graduate students travelling
from northern or eastern Canada to the Banff meetings.
Nevertheless the CGU Meeting Questionnaire, summarized above,
indicates some interest in occasional meetings elsewhere in
Canada.
We are committed to Banff for the 1997
meeting since the facilities must be booked two years in advance.
Therefore, 1998 is the first possible occasion to hold a meeting
elsewhere. Since 1998 is the International Year of the Ocean, an
east coast location such as Halifax might be appropriate. However,
in order to hold a meeting in a new location we need volunteers
to form the local organizing committee.. Please send suggestions
for an eastern venue for 1998 or later, and/or names of potential
local organizers to Roy Hyndman, President of the CGU, at the
coordinates given at the end of this newsletter.
